Hamza Bey Mosque

What It Is

Hamza Bey Mosque is an early Ottoman monument built in 1460. After serving as a place of worship, the building was neglected for a long period and later housed a cinema, leading local residents to often refer to it as 'Alcazar.' Travellers visit to see one of the oldest surviving Ottoman-era structures in the city and observe its architectural heritage.

Getting There

Located at the corner of Egnatia and Venizelou streets, the site is directly in central Thessaloniki. Walking from Aristotelous Square takes roughly 5 to 10 minutes.

Time to Allow

Allow approximately 20 to 30 minutes to view the building, its dome, and the surrounding exterior masonry.

When to Visit

Daylight hours offer the best visibility for examining exterior architectural details. The surrounding street intersection is busy with everyday urban traffic, but the monument itself rarely experiences heavy tourist crowding.
