City Layout and Districts

Tiraspol is organized along a single central spine: 25th October Street. Navigation relies on three main reference points:

  • The Central Core: Surrounding Suvorov Square, this district contains the Supreme Soviet building, city monuments, and the central park.
  • The Riverfront: De Wollant Park borders the south side of the center, running along the Dniester River embankment.
  • Bender: Just west across the river, this sister city houses the historic Bender Fortress and links directly to Tiraspol.

Airport Arrival and Local Transit

Arrive via Chișinău International Airport (RMO), the closest flight gateway. From Chișinău's central bus station, frequent minibuses run directly to Tiraspol. At the administrative border, officers process your passport and issue a paper migration card.

Inside Tiraspol, central sights are within walking distance. For longer cross-town trips or visiting Bender, hop on local trolleybuses or minibuses and pay in cash.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming Bank Cards Work: Foreign credit cards and ATMs do not operate under the local banking network. Bring cash in euros, dollars, or Moldovan lei to exchange for Transnistrian rubles.
  • Losing the Migration Slip: You must retain the immigration slip issued at the checkpoint and return it when leaving.
  • Photographing Military Posts: Never photograph checkpoints, border guards, or defense facilities. General street scenes are permissible.

Sensible Trip Shape

Start along 25th October Street and Suvorov Square to see the central monuments and government buildings, then walk south into De Wollant Park. Dedicate your second half-day to crossing the river for Bender Fortress. Outlying locations, such as Noul Neamț Monastery, can wait for an extended itinerary.
