Nihonbashi
What it is
Nihonbashi is a business and finance district built around the bridge of the same name, which has marked this crossing point since 1603. The current bridge dates from 1911, carved from stone and set on a steel frame, and sits beneath an expressway overpass that dampens the effect somewhat. Beyond the bridge itself, the district is known for its department stores, old merchant-era shopping streets, and as the traditional starting point for Japan's historic highways — a marker near the bridge lists distances to other cities. It appeals to travellers interested in Tokyo's commercial history rather than a single standout sight.
Getting there
Nihonbashi Station is served by the Tozai, Ginza, and Asakusa subway lines, and Mitsukoshimae Station on the Ginza and Hanzomon lines sits right by the bridge. From central Tokyo hubs like Tokyo Station, it's about a 5-10 minute subway ride, or a 15-20 minute walk.
Time to allow
An hour or two is enough to see the bridge, browse one of the department stores, and walk a few of the surrounding streets.
When to go
Weekday mornings and early afternoons tend to be quieter, since the area is primarily an office and shopping district rather than a tourist stop. Weekends can be calmer in some pockets but department stores draw steady crowds regardless of day.

- Marunouchi (0.6km) — a short walk for more upscale shopping and dining near Tokyo Station.
