Venice's historic center sits on water, with no cars and no room for a pool. For this theme, choose between the Lido, the mainland near the airport, or countryside villas in the Veneto.
Lido di Venezia
A barrier island facing the Adriatic, a short vaporetto ride from St Mark's Square. Unlike the main island, it allows cars and has resort-style hotels with outdoor pools and beach access. Suits a beach-and-pool base while reaching the sights by boat in under twenty minutes. Busy during the Film Festival in September.
Mainland: Mestre and near the airport
Mestre and the area around Marco Polo Airport (VCE) have newer hotels and resorts with pools, geared toward drivers. A direct train links Mestre to Venezia Santa Lucia in under fifteen minutes. Suits travelers who value space and parking over lagoon proximity, at the cost of a daily commute.
Countryside villas in the Veneto
Further out, toward the Brenta Riviera or countryside near Treviso and Padua, are villas with private pools among vineyards. A rental car is necessary, since transport is sparse, and Venice becomes a day trip rather than a base.
What to check before booking
- Whether the pool is outdoor and seasonal (usually closed late autumn to spring) or heated year-round.
- Connection to the main island: vaporetto distance on the Lido, train frequency from Mestre, or drive time from a villa.
- Whether a car is needed: essential for villas, unneeded near the lagoon.
- Transfer options from Marco Polo Airport, the shared gateway.
When to visit
Pool season runs roughly late May to September, overlapping Venice's peak tourist season, so outdoor pools and Lido resorts fill up early. Early September also brings the Film Festival, tightening Lido availability. Shoulder months like April or October trade a usable pool for lower demand.

St Mark's Basilica
St Mark's Basilica is the patriarchal cathedral of Venice, said to hold the relics of the Evangelist Mark.
