This is Palladio's church on its own small island facing St Mark's Basin, built in white marble between 1566 and 1610. The draw is the building itself — a clean, classically proportioned Renaissance facade and interior that reads very differently from the ornate Byzantine style of St Mark's across the water. Inside, look for the choir stalls and the Tintoretto paintings flanking the altar. Many visitors also go up the campanile for a view back across the lagoon toward the Piazzetta and the Doge's Palace.
Getting there
The island isn't connected by bridge, so you go by vaporetto. From San Marco / San Zaccaria, line 2 crosses the basin in about 3-5 minutes. It's a short hop, but factor in waiting time for the boat.
How much time to allow
The church interior can be seen in 20-30 minutes. If you also go up the bell tower, allow closer to an hour in total.
When to go
The island itself stays fairly quiet even when San Marco across the water is packed, since it takes an extra boat trip to get here. Early morning or late afternoon light is best for photos from the campanile, looking back toward the Piazzetta and Riva degli Schiavoni.

Because the crossing is so short, this pairs naturally with a walk along the San Marco waterfront: the Doge's Palace (0.5km), the Bridge of Sighs (0.6km), and the church of San Zaccaria (0.6km) are all within a few minutes of San Zaccaria vaporetto stop, making it easy to loop the island into a half-day covering the main San Marco sights.
