San Michele
The Island of San Michele is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, Veneto, northern Italy. The island contains San Michele in Isola, a Catholic church, as well as the San Michele Cemetery, Venice’s principal cemetery. It is associated with the sestiere of Cannaregio, from which it lies a short distance northeast.
What it is
San Michele is a walled cemetery island in the Venetian lagoon, just northeast of Cannaregio. Most visitors come specifically to walk the San Michele Cemetery, Venice's main burial ground since Napoleonic times, laid out in cloistered sections separated by cypress-lined walkways. The adjoining church, San Michele in Isola, is a Renaissance building with a white stone facade facing the water. There's no beach or park here; it's a quiet, contemplative stop rather than a nature destination in the usual sense.
Getting there
The island isn't connected by bridge. From central Venice, take a vaporetto (line 4.1 or 4.2) from Fondamente Nove, a few minutes' walk from Cannaregio. The crossing itself takes only about 5 minutes, but factor in waiting time and the walk from wherever you're staying.
How long to spend
An hour is enough to see the church and walk through the main cemetery sections. If you're looking for a specific grave or want to linger in the quieter garden areas, allow closer to two hours.
When to go
Mornings tend to be calmer, before day-trip groups from central Venice arrive. It's not a heavily touristed site compared to the rest of the city, but it can still feel busy around All Souls' Day and other periods when local families visit graves. Being outdoors and largely uncovered, it's more pleasant outside the height of summer heat.
Combine it with
Since the vaporetto back lands you near Cannaregio and Castello, it's easy to pair the island with sights on that side of the city: Santi Giovanni e Paolo (0.9km), a large Gothic church with Venetian doge tombs, is a natural next stop. Santa Maria dei Miracoli (1km) and San Francesco della Vigna (1km) are also within easy walking distance, and Madonna dell'Orto (1.2km) rounds out a route through Cannaregio's quieter churches.
