Transport Modes in Yerevan

Yerevan is a compact city where most central areas are highly walkable, but longer distances require specific modes of transport.

  • Metro: The most efficient way to bypass traffic. It is best for north-south travel across the city center.
  • Ride-Hailing Apps: Apps like Yandex Go and GG are the primary way to get around. They win on convenience, door-to-door service, and transparent pricing.
  • Marshrutkas: These privately operated minibuses cover routes the metro does not. They are the cheapest option but can be crowded and less predictable.

Airport to City Center

Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) is located a short distance from the city center. Options include:

  • Airport Bus: A dedicated shuttle that runs regularly to the city center. Low cost, moderate effort.
  • Taxis/Ride-Hailing: The fastest and most comfortable option. High convenience, medium cost band.
  • Private Transfers: Pre-arranged vehicles for those with heavy luggage or large groups.

Tickets and Passes

The metro uses a simple token system purchased at station kiosks. There are no complex tourist passes that offer significant savings for short-term visitors. For ride-hailing, digital payment via app is standard, while marshrutkas require small denominations of local cash.

Practical Notes

  • Rush Hours: Traffic congestion is heavy during morning and evening peaks, particularly on main arteries. Use the metro during these times to save time.
  • Accessibility: Older metro stations and some sidewalks in the center have limited accessibility for wheelchairs or strollers.
  • Luggage: Ride-hailing cars vary in size; select a 'Comfort' or 'Large' class if carrying multiple suitcases.
  • Last Services: The metro typically stops running around midnight. After this, ride-hailing apps are the only reliable option.
