How to plan your first trip to Yerevan, Armenia

City Layout and Districts
Yerevan is designed as a circular city with a central hub. The heart of the city is Republic Square, from which major avenues radiate outward. For first-timers, the city is best understood in three zones: the Center (Kentron), where most monuments and cafes are located; the Cascade area, which leads up toward the hills; and the Hrazdan Gorge, which provides a natural green border to the city.
Arrival and Getting Around
Most visitors arrive via Zvartnots International Airport (EVN). To reach the city center, the most reliable options are official airport taxis or ride-sharing apps. Inside the city, the layout is highly walkable, especially in the center. For longer distances, ride-sharing apps are the standard for transparent pricing. The metro system is simple and efficient for crossing the city quickly, though it has limited coverage compared to larger capitals.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
- Over-scheduling the center: Many visitors try to see every museum in one day. Instead, spend an afternoon wandering the courtyards to experience the local pace of life.
- Ignoring the water: Don't overlook the public drinking fountains (pulpulaks) found on almost every street corner; they provide free, clean drinking water.
- Underestimating the hills: The walk to the top of the Cascade is steep; use the internal escalators to save energy for the viewpoints.
Suggested First-Trip Itinerary
Prioritize these experiences first:
- The Essentials: Republic Square, the Cascade Complex, and the Yerevan Vernissage market for local crafts.
- Cultural Context: A visit to the Matenadaran (ancient manuscripts) to understand Armenia's literary history.
- Food and Drink: Sample local brandy and wine at a dedicated tasting house.
- What can wait: Extensive trips to distant monasteries can be saved for a second visit or a dedicated day trip, as they are outside the city limits.
