Understanding the City Layout

Zanzibar City splits into two distinct parts along Creek Road: Stone Town (Mji Mkongwe) to the west and Ng'ambo to the east.

  • Stone Town: A UNESCO-listed historic promontory. Its maze of narrow coral stone alleys, carved timber doors, and historic sites is almost entirely pedestrian.
  • Ng'ambo: Meaning "the other side," this is the modern commercial and residential center where daily urban life occurs.

Getting In and Moving Around

International flights often land at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam on the mainland. To reach Zanzibar City:

  • Domestic hopper flight: Move to DAR's domestic terminal for a brief flight directly to Zanzibar's airport just south of town.
  • Mainland ferry: Take a taxi to the Dar es Salaam ferry terminal and take a passenger ferry straight to Zanzibar port.

Inside Stone Town, walking is the only practical option. For longer trips across the city or island, hire a taxi or board a dala-dala (minibus) near Darajani.

Common Mistakes and What to Do Instead

  • Trusting phone navigation: GPS signals drop inside deep stone alleyways. Navigate by landmarks such as the sea or Darajani Market instead.
  • Underdressing: Zanzibar is culturally conservative. Keep shoulders and knees covered in the city; save swimwear for hotel pools and beaches.
  • Using unofficial street touts: Avoid informal guides offering tours on street corners. Hire licensed guides directly through official museum desks.

A Sensible First-Trip Sequence

Dedicate your first day to Stone Town on foot: see the Old Fort, the former slave market site, and the Forodhani waterfront. Save outer spice farms and coastal beaches for later days once you understand the urban layout.
