Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio
The Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio, officially known as Basilica romana minore collegiata abbaziale prepositurale di Sant'Ambrogio, is an ancient Romanesque-style, Roman Catholic church located in the center of Milan, in the region of Lombardy, Italy.
What it is
Sant'Ambrogio is one of Milan's oldest churches, founded in the 4th century by Ambrose, the city's patron saint, and rebuilt in its current Romanesque form starting in the 11th century. Its brick facade, atrium and bell towers are a good example of Lombard Romanesque architecture, and the interior holds early Christian mosaics, a gilded altar dating to the 9th century, and the crypt where Ambrose's remains are kept. It's a working church as well as a historic site, so expect an active place of worship rather than a museum.
Getting there
From central Milan (Duomo), it's about a 15-20 minute ride on the M2 metro line to the Sant'Ambrogio stop, which lets out close to the basilica's entrance. Trams also serve the area. If arriving from Malpensa (MXP) or Linate (LIN) airport, the fastest route is into the city centre first, then a short metro or tram connection.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend 30-45 minutes inside, longer if you want to look closely at the mosaics and altar or sit for a while in the atrium.
When to go
Mornings on weekdays tend to be quieter. Because it remains an active church, services take place regularly, so certain areas may be off-limits or the atmosphere less suited to sightseeing during Mass.

The basilica sits within easy walking distance of several other sights: the Archaeological Museum of Milan and San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore are both about 0.4km away, while Santa Maria delle Grazie and Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper are roughly 0.5-0.6km away. These can comfortably be grouped into a single half-day itinerary on foot.
