What it is
San Lorenzo Maggiore is one of Milan's oldest churches, with origins going back to the Roman era, though the building seen today is the result of several rebuildings over the centuries. Its octagonal plan and layered brick structure are unusual for Milan, and art historians have noted its architectural originality. In front of the church stands a row of ancient Roman columns, the Colonne di San Lorenzo, which is as much a local landmark as the basilica itself. Inside, look for the Chapel of Sant'Aquilino, which preserves early Christian and late antique elements.
Getting there
The basilica sits on Corso di Porta Ticinese, just inside the old navigli canal ring, within easy walking distance of Milan's historic centre — around 20-25 minutes on foot from the Duomo, or a short tram or metro ride (nearest stop is Missori or Sant'Ambrogio on the M2 line, followed by a walk) if you'd rather not walk the whole way.

Allow around 30-45 minutes to see the interior and chapel, plus extra time to sit at the columns outside, which are a popular spot to linger.

The area around the columns gets busy in the evening, especially on weekends, when it becomes a gathering spot for locals and the churchyard fills with people. For a quieter look at the church itself, aim for daytime hours.
