Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio

Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio

The Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio is a church in Milan in northern Italy, which is in the Basilicas Park city park. It was for many years an important stop for pilgrims on their journey to Rome or to the Holy Land, because it was said to contain the tomb of the Three Magi or Three Kings.

Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio

This church in Milan's Basilicas Park area is known for the Chapel of the Magi, built to house what was long venerated as the tomb of the Three Kings. For centuries it drew pilgrims heading toward Rome or the Holy Land, and the tomb and adjoining Portinari Chapel remain the main reasons to visit today, alongside the church's Romanesque origins and later additions.

Getting there

From central Milan (Duomo area), it's a walk of roughly 20-25 minutes, or a short tram or metro ride to the Porta Ticinese / Sant'Eustorgio area followed by a few minutes on foot.

Time to allow

Plan for about 45 minutes to an hour, longer if you want to see the Portinari Chapel and any museum displays in detail.

When to go

Mornings and weekdays tend to be quieter. The surrounding Basilicas Park and nearby streets can get busy on weekends, and the church itself is a working place of worship, so avoid visiting during services if you want time to look around undisturbed.

Combine with

  • Basilica of San Lorenzo (0.5km) - one of Milan's oldest churches, an easy add-on to the same walk.
  • Santa Maria presso San Celso Church (0.5km) - close by for those interested in Milan's other historic churches.
  • San Nazaro in Brolo and Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio (1km each) - both within walking distance for a longer church-focused itinerary through this part of the city.
