Santa Maria presso San Celso Church

Santa Maria presso San Celso Church

Santa Maria dei Miracoli presso San Celso is a Roman Catholic church and a sanctuary in Milan, Lombardy, northern Italy.

What it is

Santa Maria dei Miracoli presso San Celso is a Roman Catholic sanctuary church in central Milan, built next to an earlier basilica dedicated to San Celso. The layered site — a Renaissance sanctuary church fronted by a courtyard, adjoining the older San Celso building — gives it a different feel from Milan's grander cathedrals: it's quieter, and the architecture and religious art inside are the main draw rather than scale or fame.

Getting there

It sits south of the historic centre, an area reachable on foot from the Duomo in around 25-30 minutes, or faster by tram or metro to a nearby stop followed by a short walk. If flying in, Milan is served by Malpensa (MXP) and Linate (LIN) airports, both connected to the city centre by bus or train, with the last stretch to the church done on foot or local transit.

Time to allow

Most visitors spend around 20-30 minutes inside, longer if you want to look closely at the artwork and the two connected church spaces.

When to go

Mornings tend to be calmer, and the church is rarely crowded compared with Milan's major sights, so there's no strong need to plan around peak times. Keep in mind it functions as an active place of worship, so services may affect access at certain moments.

What to combine it with

The area is dense with historic churches within easy walking distance: the Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio (0.5km) and Basilica of San Lorenzo (0.6km) are both close by, San Nazaro in Brolo is also 0.6km away, and Santa Maria presso San Satiro is a slightly longer 0.9km walk. Grouping two or three of these into one walking route makes for an efficient way to see several of Milan's lesser-visited religious sites in a single outing.
