San Pietro in Vincoli
Die Kirche San Pietro in Vincoli al Colle Oppio steht am Esquilin-Hügel im XV. Rione in der Nähe des Kolosseums in Rom. Sie ist eine Rektoratskirche, Basilica minor und Titelkirche mit der Bezeichnung Titulus sancti Petri in vinculis der römisch-katholischen Kirche.

This basilica on the Oppian Hill is best known for two things: the chains said to have bound Saint Peter, kept in a reliquary under the main altar, and Michelangelo's Moses, the centerpiece of the unfinished tomb of Pope Julius II. Most visitors come specifically for the Moses, one of Michelangelo's major sculptural works and easy to see up close without a crowd barrier. The rest of the interior is a working parish church, plainer than the sculpture would suggest.
Getting there
It sits a short walk from Cavour metro station (Line B), and it's about 10-15 minutes on foot from the Colosseum, mostly uphill via a covered staircase. From central Rome (e.g. near the Trevi Fountain or Termini), figure 15-20 minutes by metro or bus plus walking.
How long to stay
Fifteen to twenty minutes covers the Moses and a look around the nave; there isn't much else to linger over.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter. It's often included on Colosseum/Forum itineraries as a quick add-on, so it can see clusters of visitors right after large tour groups arrive nearby - if you want the Moses to yourself, avoid the late-morning rush.
Combine with
- Domus Aurea (0.3km) - Nero's underground palace, right next door.
- Arch of Constantine and Arch of Titus (0.5km each) - on the walk down toward the Colosseum.
- Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore (0.6km) - a short walk in the other direction, worth pairing if you're touring Rome's major basilicas.
