Museo Correr
Das Museo Correr oder Museo Civico Correr ist das Städtische Museum von Venedig. Es befindet sich in den Prokuratien am Markusplatz. Der Zugang liegt auf der kurzen Westseite im Napoleonischen Flügel und nimmt auch die Procuratie Nuove im Süden ein. Namensgeber des Museums ist der Venezianer Teodoro Correr (1750–1830), der seine wertvolle Sammlung von Büchern, Manuskripten, Gemälden und kunstgewerblichen Objekten der Stadt hinterließ. Heute verfügt das Museum über drei Sammlungen.
What it is
Museo Correr is Venice's city history museum, occupying the upper floor of the Procuratorie Nuove along the south side of Piazza San Marco. It brings together the civic art collection built up by Teodoro Correr with rooms devoted to the Republic of Venice's institutions, ceremonies, coinage, and everyday life, alongside Renaissance paintings by artists such as Carpaccio and the Bellini family. It suits travellers who want context on Venetian history and government rather than another look at gold-ground religious art, and the neoclassical rooms and Canova sculpture hall are worth the visit on their own.
Getting there
The museum sits directly on Piazza San Marco, so if you're already in the historic centre it's a walk rather than a journey - a few minutes from the Rialto area or the Accademia Bridge, longer from the train station or Piazzale Roma. The nearest vaporetto stops are San Marco Vallaresso and San Zaccaria, both a short walk away.
Time to allow
Plan on at least 1.5 to 2 hours to move through the historical rooms and picture gallery without rushing; a combined ticket also covers the neighbouring Doge's Palace and connected museums, which will add significantly more time if visited the same day.
When to go
Piazza San Marco is one of the busiest parts of Venice, especially through midday and in peak summer months, but the museum itself tends to be far quieter than the square outside, since most visitors focus on the Basilica and Campanile. Arriving earlier in the day generally means fewer crowds inside.
