St Mark's Basilica
Der Markusdom ist eine römisch-katholische Kirche am Markusplatz in der italienischen Stadt Venedig. Der im Jahr 829 begonnene und 1094 vollendete byzantinische Sakralbau ist dem Evangelisten Markus geweiht und beherbergt auch dessen Gebeine. Der Dom war das zentrale Staatsheiligtum der Republik Venedig bis zu ihrem Ende 1797 und ist seit 1807 die Kathedrale des Patriarchen von Venedig. Er befindet sich am Markusplatz im Sestiere San Marco und bildet mit dem freistehenden Markusturm und dem angrenzenden Dogenpalast ein architektonisches Ensemble.
St Mark's Basilica
St Mark's Basilica is the cathedral church of Venice, seat of the Patriarch since 1807. Visitors come mainly for the Byzantine-influenced interior and gold mosaics covering the domes and upper walls, along with the relics of St Mark the Evangelist, the city's patron saint. The exterior facade facing the piazza, with its arches and horses, is as much a draw as the interior itself.
Getting there
The basilica sits directly on St Mark's Square, in the heart of central Venice, so most visitors simply walk there. From the Rialto Bridge area it's roughly a 10-15 minute walk through the narrow streets. If arriving from the train station or a hotel further out, the vaporetto (water bus) to the San Marco or San Zaccaria stop leaves a short walk of a few minutes to the square.
Time to allow
Seeing the interior and main areas typically takes about 30-45 minutes. Add extra time if you plan to view the upper terrace or the treasury, and factor in queuing time separately, as lines can be long.
When to go
Arriving early in the morning, shortly after opening, tends to mean shorter lines and a quieter interior. The square and basilica get very crowded by mid-morning through afternoon, especially in peak season and around major holidays. High tide ("acqua alta") can also flood the square in autumn and winter, so checking conditions ahead of a visit is worthwhile.
What to combine it with
Everything of note is within a minute or two on foot. St Mark's Campanile and St Mark's Clocktower both sit right on the square, and the Doge's Palace and Bridge of Sighs are just as close, making it easy to see all four alongside the basilica in a single outing around the square.
