Elephant Building
The Elephant Building or Chang Building is a skyscraper at Paholyothin Road and Ratchadaphisek Road in Bangkok, Thailand. It lies in the north Bangkok business district and Chatuchak District. The building is one of the better known buildings in Bangkok as it resembles an elephant. It was a collaboration between Dr Arun Chaisaree and architect Ong-ard Satrabhandhu The building has 32 floors and is 102 metres (335 ft) high. It was completed in 1997. The Elephant Building was ranked number four of the "20 World's Iconic Skyscrapers [sic]" by CNNGo in February 2011.
What it is
The Elephant Building is a 32-storey office and residential tower near the Chatuchak business district, built to resemble an elephant when viewed from a distance: the two square towers form the legs and body, while a connecting structure at the top forms the head, complete with a trunk-shaped protrusion and small round windows for eyes. Completed in 1997, it was designed by architect Ong-ard Satrabhandhu. Most travellers come to see and photograph the building from outside rather than go inside, since it's a working office/residential complex, not a tourist attraction with facilities for visitors.
Getting there
The building sits at the intersection of Paholyothin and Ratchadaphisek roads. The closest way in is the BTS Skytrain to Mo Chit station or the MRT to Chatuchak Park or Phahon Yothin stations, followed by a short walk. From central Bangkok (Siam or Sukhumvit areas), expect roughly 20-30 minutes by BTS/MRT, or longer by taxi depending on traffic.
How long to spend
Viewing and photographing the building from street level typically takes 15-30 minutes. There isn't a dedicated observation deck or visitor entrance for tourists, so most visits are brief.
When to go
Late afternoon or early evening gives better light for photos and avoids the harshest midday heat. This is a busy traffic junction on weekdays, so expect heavy vehicle noise and congestion during rush hour. It isn't typically crowded with tourists, since it functions primarily as an office building rather than a sightseeing stop.
Combine with
The building's location near Chatuchak makes it easy to pair with other sights in the area. Chatuchak Park (2.4km) and Queen Sirikit Park (2.9km) are within a short taxi or transit ride for a green-space break. Bangkok Aquarium (2.1km) is also nearby if travelling with family. For a longer outing, the Chatuchak Weekend Market (3.3km) is a natural add-on, though it's only open on weekends, so plan your visit accordingly.
