What it is
The Grand Palace is the former royal residence and seat of government for the Kings of Siam, in continuous use from 1782 until 1925. It's a large walled compound of pavilions, throne halls, and government buildings built up over more than two centuries, so the architecture ranges across different reigns and styles. Within the same grounds is Wat Phra Kaew, the temple that houses the Emerald Buddha, which most visitors treat as part of the same visit. The site is still used for state ceremonies, so parts of it are working royal ground rather than a pure museum.
Getting there
The palace sits on Rattanakosin Island, the old royal district of Bangkok. From the modern city centre (Sukhumvit or Silom areas), the most reliable route is a taxi or the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Chang or Tha Tien pier, since the nearest BTS/MRT stations are still a walk away. Allow around 30-45 minutes from central Bangkok depending on traffic, which can be heavy and unpredictable by road.
Time to allow
Plan for at least 2-3 hours to see the palace halls and Wat Phra Kaew without rushing, more if you want to read the signage or linger in the galleries.
When to go
Go early in the day, both to avoid the heat and the tour-group crowds that build up by mid-morning. This is one of the most visited sites in Bangkok, and it gets busy and slow-moving, especially where large groups pass through the main halls. There's a dress code covering shoulders and knees, so plan clothing accordingly.
Combine it with
Everything nearby is walkable. Sanam Luang, the open ceremonial field, is about 0.6km away, and the Museum of Siam (0.7km) and Bangkok National Museum (0.9km) both add context on Thai history and could reasonably fill the rest of the day. The palace itself is part of Rattanakosin Island, the old city core, so a stroll through the surrounding area ties the visit together.
