Sanam Luang
Sanam Luang
Sanam Luang is a large open field in the historic core of Bangkok, directly across from Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace. It's less a single sight than a public space: an oval of grass used for royal ceremonies, kite flying in season, and simply as a break from the dense temple and museum district around it. Travellers usually come through it on the way to the Grand Palace or the National Museum rather than seeking it out on its own, but it's worth pausing in for the open sightlines to the palace walls and the surrounding colonial and religious architecture.
Getting there
From central Bangkok (Siam or Sukhumvit areas), the most reliable route is a taxi or ride-hail, which takes roughly 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. Alternatively, take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Chang or Tha Maharaj pier, then walk a few minutes to the field; this avoids road traffic and is a common approach for travellers already exploring the river or Old Town area.
How much time to allow
Sanam Luang itself only needs 15-30 minutes to walk across or rest in, since it's an open field rather than a site with exhibits. Most visitors fold this time into a longer half-day covering the Grand Palace and nearby museums.
When to go
Early morning or late afternoon is more comfortable, since the field has little shade and midday sun can be intense. The space fills with vendors, food stalls, and crowds during royal ceremonies and ordinary weekends, so expect more activity then than on a quiet weekday.
Combine it with
- Bangkok National Museum (0.3km) - one of Southeast Asia's larger museum collections, an easy walk away
- National Art Gallery (0.4km) - a quieter stop for Thai art, close enough to add on
- Grand Palace (0.6km) - the main draw in the area, directly bordering the field
- Khaosan Road (0.6km) - useful for food and a break after a morning of temples and museums
