Val Gardena
Val Gardena is a valley in the Dolomites of South Tyrol, Northern Italy. It is best known as a tourist skiing, rock climbing, and woodcarving area.
What it is
Val Gardena is one of the main valleys of the Dolomites in South Tyrol, cut through by three villages (Ortisei, Santa Cristina, Selva) and ringed by rock groups including the Sella and Odle/Puez massifs. Outside the ski season it's a base for hiking and rock climbing, with cable cars carrying walkers up to alpine meadows and via ferrata routes. The area also has a long local tradition of woodcarving, visible in workshops and small museums in the villages.
Getting there
There's no single "city centre" — the valley is reached by road from Bolzano, about 40 minutes' drive to Ortisei, or via regional bus. From further afield, the nearest airports are Venice Marco Polo (VCE) and Innsbruck (INN), each roughly two to two and a half hours away by car; there is no direct train into the valley, so a car or bus connection is needed for the final stretch.
How much time to allow
A single day lets you ride one cable car and do a moderate hike or explore a village. To take in more than one part of the valley, or combine a lift-assisted walk with time in Ortisei's centre, plan on two or three days.
When to go
Winter (roughly December to March) is ski season and the villages get busy with it; July and August bring the heaviest hiking traffic and midday queues for popular cable cars. Late spring and early autumn are quieter, with better chances of finding trails and lift lines uncrowded, though some higher lifts may have reduced service outside peak months.
Combining with nearby sights
Saslonch is close by at 4.6km and can be paired with a village visit. Sella Pass (7.2km) and Gardena Pass (8.1km) are natural add-ons for anyone driving through the area, both offering high-altitude viewpoints on the road between valleys. Dolomiti Superski's network extends to about 10.4km away and is more relevant if you're planning multiple days of skiing across linked areas rather than a single outing.
