Bargello National Museum
バルジェロ美術館 はイタリアのフィレンツェにある美術館。かつてはバルジェロ宮殿 あるいはポポロ宮殿 とも呼ばれ、兵舎と監獄として使われていた。単にバルジェロといえば、一般にこの建物を指す。
What it is
The Bargello occupies a fortified 13th-century building that served in turn as Florence's town hall, police headquarters, and prison before becoming a museum in 1865. It now holds the city's main collection of Renaissance sculpture, with works by Donatello, Michelangelo, Cellini, and della Robbia displayed across a stone courtyard and vaulted halls that still show traces of the building's earlier uses. It suits travellers interested in sculpture specifically, as a counterpoint to the painting-heavy Uffizi.
Getting there
It sits in the historic centre, within a few minutes' walk of Piazza della Signoria and the Duomo, so most visitors simply walk over from wherever they're staying in central Florence. There's no need for buses or taxis unless you're coming from outside the walking-distance core.
Time to allow
Plan on one to two hours. The collection is focused rather than sprawling, but the courtyard and upper-floor rooms reward a slower pace, especially if you want to compare Donatello's bronze and marble Davids.
When to go
It draws far fewer crowds than the Uffizi or Accademia, so queuing is rarely an issue. Mornings tend to be quieter than mid-afternoon. Because it's an unheated stone building, it can feel cold in winter and pleasantly cool in summer.
What to combine it with
Its location makes it easy to pair with a short walking loop: Orsanmichele and Piazza della Signoria are each about 0.2km away, the Vasari Corridor is similarly close, and Piazza del Duomo is roughly 0.3km off. All are reachable on foot in a few minutes, making the Bargello a natural stop alongside the rest of central Florence's core sights.
