Santa Trinita in Florence
Santa Trinita is a working Roman Catholic church on the square of the same name, where Via de' Tornabuoni crosses toward the Arno. It is the mother church of the Vallumbrosan Order, a Benedictine offshoot founded in 1092, and inside it holds fresco cycles and chapels typical of Florence's major churches without drawing the crowds of the cathedral. The building and its facade are worth a look even from the piazza, which also gives a clear view down Via de' Tornabuoni, one of the city's principal shopping streets.
Getting there
The church sits in the historic centre, an easy walk from most central hotels. From the Duomo it is about 10-15 minutes on foot along Via de' Tornabuoni; from the main train station, Santa Maria Novella, allow around 10 minutes. No public transport is really necessary for this stretch of the centre.
How much time to allow
A visit to the interior and chapels typically takes 20-30 minutes, longer if you want to study the frescoes closely.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter, and the piazza itself rarely gets as congested as nearby squares. Via de' Tornabuoni can get busy with shoppers later in the day, which spills into the approach to the church.
Combine it with
Palazzo Davanzati (0.2km) is a short walk away and gives a sense of a preserved medieval Florentine house. The Loggia del Mercato Nuovo and Piazza della Repubblica (both around 0.3km) work well as a continuation toward the city centre, and the Ponte Vecchio (0.3km) is close enough to pair with a walk south to the Arno.
