ヴェッキオ橋
Ponte Vecchio
ヴェッキオ橋またはポンテ・ヴェッキオ は、イタリアのフィレンツェを流れるアルノ川に架かる中世の橋。最初はローマ時代に架けられたが、数度洪水で流され、現在の橋は1345年に再建されたもの。
What it is
Ponte Vecchio is a stone bridge over the Arno lined on both sides with shops, giving it a solid, built-up look rather than an open span. It's the only bridge in Florence to survive World War II intact. The shops today are mostly jewellers and goldsmiths, a trade that took over from the original butchers and tanners centuries ago. Walking across, you're moving through a row of small storefronts as much as crossing a river — worth it for the setting and the view up and down the Arno as much as for the shops themselves.
Getting there
It sits in the historic centre, an easy walk from most central hotels — around 10-15 minutes from the Duomo, mostly on foot through pedestrian streets. There's no need for buses or taxis unless you're coming from further out.
Time to allow
Crossing the bridge itself takes only a few minutes, but plan 20-30 minutes to browse the shop windows and pause at the open viewing points along the way.
When to go
The bridge gets crowded, especially midday and in the late afternoon when tour groups pass through alongside shoppers. An early morning visit is noticeably quieter and gives clearer views along the river. Evenings can be pleasant too, with the shops closed but the bridge itself still open to walk across.
Combine it with
Everything of note here is within a couple of minutes' walk. The Uffizi Gallery and Museo Galileo are both about 0.2km away, making them natural stops before or after crossing the bridge. The Loggia del Mercato Nuovo and Palazzo Davanzati, also 0.2km off, work well folded into the same walk through this part of the centre.
