Santa Maria del Carmine
산타 마리아 델 카르미네 성당(Basilica di Santa Maria del Carmine)은 이탈리아 피렌체의 올트라르노 구역에 있는 가르멜회의 성당이다. 마사초, 마솔리노 다 파니칼레 등이 시작하여 후대의 필리피노 리피가 완성한, 르네상스 시대의 프레스코를 소장한 브란카치 예배당이 있는 곳으로 유명하다.

This Carmelite church in the Oltrarno district is visited almost entirely for one reason: the Brancacci Chapel, attached to the church, which holds fresco cycles by Masaccio and Masolino, later completed by Filippino Lippi. The rest of the church was largely rebuilt after an 18th-century fire, so the frescoes are the reason to come rather than the building's overall interior.
Getting there
From central Florence (Piazza della Signoria or the Duomo), it's a walk of roughly 15-20 minutes across the Ponte Vecchio or Ponte alla Carraia into Oltrarno. There's no direct tram or metro stop nearby, so walking is the simplest option; several city bus lines also stop within a few minutes of the church.
Time to allow
The chapel itself is small, and most visitors spend 20-30 minutes with the frescoes. If you want to linger on details or read the accompanying information panels, allow closer to 45 minutes. The main body of the church can be seen briefly on top of that.
When to go
Because the chapel has a limited-capacity viewing system and is a fixed stop on many guided itineraries, it can get busy by mid-morning, especially in spring and autumn. Arriving earlier in the day tends to mean a quieter visit.
Combine with
- Brancacci Chapel (0.1km) - effectively the same visit, as it's part of the same complex.
- Santo Spirito (0.3km) - a short walk away, with its own Renaissance interior and a lively square good for a coffee stop.
- Ognissanti Church (0.6km) - across the river, worth adding if you're continuing toward the city centre.
- Boboli Gardens (0.6km) - a good option if you want to pair the visit with an outdoor stretch through the Pitti Palace grounds.
