Ognissanti Church
Ognissanti Church
Ognissanti is a Franciscan church founded by the Umiliati, a lay religious order, and dedicated to all saints and martyrs. It's a working parish church rather than a formal museum, but it holds art connected to the Vespucci family (of Amerigo Vespucci fame) and to Sandro Botticelli, who is buried here. Travellers with an interest in Florentine religious art or the city's mercantile history tend to find it worthwhile, though it draws far fewer visitors than the major basilicas nearby.
Getting there
The church sits on Piazza Ognissanti, close to the Arno river on the western edge of Florence's historic centre. From the Duomo or Piazza della Signoria it's a walk of about 15-20 minutes through the centre. From Santa Maria Novella train station it's roughly a 10-minute walk.
How much time to allow
Most visitors spend 20-30 minutes inside, longer if you linger over the artwork or the cloister area.
When to go
Because it's a lesser-visited stop compared to Florence's headline sights, it rarely feels crowded. Mornings tend to be quieter and better lit for viewing the interior. As an active church, be mindful of services and dress modestly.
Combine it with
- Basilica of Santa Maria Novella (0.3km) — an easy first stop before or after Ognissanti.
- Basilica of the Holy Trinity (0.5km) — a short walk toward the city centre.
- Brancacci Chapel (0.5km) and Santa Maria del Carmine (0.6km) — both across the Arno, worth combining with each other given their proximity.
