香椎宮
Kashii-gū
香椎宮（かしいぐう）は、福岡県福岡市東区香椎にある神社。勅祭社。旧社格は官幣大社で、現在は神社本庁の別表神社。
What Kashii-gū is
Kashii-gū is a Shinto shrine in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka, dedicated to Emperor Chūai and Empress Jingū. According to legend, this was the site of Chūai's palace, and the shrine sits within a wooded precinct that gives it a quieter, more forested feel than shrines in the downtown area. Travellers come mainly for the calm atmosphere, the approach path lined with camphor trees, and the shrine buildings themselves rather than for any single standout structure.
Getting there
From central Fukuoka (Hakata or Tenjin), the shrine is reachable by train on the JR Kashii Line to Kashii-jingū-mae Station, followed by a short walk. Depending on your starting point and connections, the trip generally takes around 30 to 40 minutes. A taxi from downtown is faster but more expensive given the distance.
How much time to allow
An hour is usually enough to walk the grounds, see the main shrine buildings, and enjoy the approach avenue. If you plan to walk slowly through the wooded areas or explore surrounding paths, allow closer to 90 minutes.
When to go
Mornings tend to be the quietest, with soft light filtering through the trees along the approach. The shrine can see more visitors during New Year and major festival periods, so those wanting a peaceful visit may want to avoid those times. Outside of such occasions, it is generally not a crowded site.
What to combine it with
Najima Castle ruins are about 2.9km away and can be paired with Kashii-gū for a half-day focused on history. Those interested in more modern architecture could continue to Island Tower Sky Club (3.1km) or Island City (3.9km), a planned waterfront district. Fukuoka Mosque, roughly 4.4km away, is a further option for travellers interested in the city's religious diversity. Given the distances, a taxi or short train-and-walk combination works better than covering all these on foot in one outing.
