筥崎宮
Hakozaki Shrine
筥崎宮（はこざきぐう）は福岡県福岡市東区箱崎に在る神社。式内社（名神大社）、筑前国一宮。旧社格は官幣大社で、現在は神社本庁の別表神社。
What it is
Hakozaki Shrine is a Shintō shrine in Fukuoka and one of the city's older religious sites, with a large torii gate and approach leading to the main hall. It's a working shrine rather than a museum piece, so visitors come to see the shrine architecture, walk the approach path, and observe or take part in ordinary Shintō practices like offering prayers at the main hall.
Getting there
From central Fukuoka, the shrine is reachable by local train or bus in roughly 15-20 minutes; Hakozakigū-mae Station on the Fukuoka City Subway Hakozaki Line puts you within a short walk of the grounds. If arriving from Fukuoka Airport (FUK), it's a similarly short subway ride with a transfer, generally under 30 minutes door to door.
How much time to allow
An hour is usually enough to walk the grounds, see the main hall and torii, and take a slow lap of the shrine precinct. Add extra time if you want to linger during a festival or explore the surrounding streets.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter and more comfortable for walking the grounds. The shrine can get busy around New Year and during festival dates, when crowds and stalls fill the approach; if you prefer a calmer visit, avoid those peak periods.
Combine it with
- Maidashi (0.5km) — close enough to combine as a short add-on walk.
- Fukuoka Mosque (0.7km) — an easy walk away, offering a contrasting religious site.
- Genkō Historical Museum (0.9km) — a nearby stop for local history context.
- Sōfuku-ji Temple (1.3km) — a bit further but still walkable, useful if pairing Shintō and Buddhist sites in one outing.
