承天寺
Jōten-ji Temple
承天寺（じょうてんじ）は福岡県福岡市博多区博多駅前に在る臨済宗東福寺派の寺院。博多旧市街にある寺院の一つ。
What it is
Jōten-ji is a Rinzai Zen temple in the Hakata district, founded in 1242 by the monk Enni Ben'en shortly after he returned from studying in China, with funding from a Chinese merchant, Xie Guo Ming. It's a working temple rather than a major sightseeing complex, with a quiet main hall and grounds that give a sense of Hakata's old merchant-town character. It's also associated with the introduction of several things brought back from China via this temple network, including udon, soba, and manjū, which is of interest if you're tracing the origins of Japanese food culture.
Getting there
Jōten-ji sits in central Hakata, an easy walk from Hakata Station — roughly 10 to 15 minutes on foot. It's also within walking distance of the Gion subway station on the Kūkō Line, which connects directly to Fukuoka Airport (FUK) in a few stops.
Time to allow
Plan on 20 to 30 minutes. The grounds are compact, and unless you're lingering over the garden or a specific hall, there isn't a lot of built-in time here.
When to go
Mornings tend to be calmer, since this isn't a heavily touristed stop compared to nearby Kushida Shrine. As a working temple, treat it as a place to visit respectfully rather than a photo stop, and be mindful during any active religious observances.
Combine it with
Jōten-ji is well placed for a short temple-and-shrine walk: Tōchō-ji Temple and Shōfuku-ji Temple are both about 0.3km away, and Kushida Shrine is roughly 0.6km away. If you want to extend the outing, Hakata-za theatre is about 1km further on.
