北野天満宮
Kitano Tenmangū
北野天満宮 は、京都市上京区にある神社（天満宮）。二十二社（下八社）の一社。旧社格は官幣中社で、現在は神社本庁の別表神社。旧称は北野神社。神紋は「星梅鉢紋」。 通称として天神さん・北野さんとも呼ばれる。全国の天満宮、天神社、菅原社などは約1万2000社もあり、福岡県太宰府市の太宰府天満宮とともに天神信仰の中心で、当社から全国各地に勧請が行われている。近年は学問の神として多くの受験生から信仰されている。
What it is
Kitano Tenmangū is a Shinto shrine in Kamigyō-ku, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a Heian-era scholar and statesman who was deified after his death and is now worshipped as the god of learning. Students and their families visit to pray for success in exams, and the grounds are known for their plum trees, which Michizane was said to have loved. The shrine buildings and approach have a quieter, more local feel than Kyoto's larger tourist temples.
Getting there
From central Kyoto (Kyoto Station or the Kawaramachi/Gion area), the shrine is most easily reached by city bus, with a ride of roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic and starting point. There is no direct subway or train station at the shrine itself, so bus or taxi is the practical option.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend around 45 minutes to an hour walking the grounds, main hall, and torii-lined approach. Add extra time if visiting during plum blossom season, when the plum grove draws more visitors and is worth a slower walk.
When to go
Late February to March, during plum blossom season, is a distinctive time to visit but also the most crowded, particularly on weekends. Mornings tend to be calmer than afternoons. Outside blossom season, the shrine is generally much quieter than nearby Kinkaku-ji.
Combining with nearby sights
- Kinkaku-ji Temple (1.3km) is the closest major sight and pairs naturally with a visit here.
- Myōshin-ji Temple (1.5km) and Ryōan-ji Temple (1.6km) are within a similar range and can be combined into a half-day loop.
- Daitoku-ji Temple (1.9km) is a bit farther but still reasonable to add if you have more time.
