龍安寺
Ryōan-ji Temple
龍安寺（りょうあんじ）は、京都市右京区龍安寺御陵ノ下町にある臨済宗妙心寺派の寺院。大本山妙心寺の境外塔頭。山号は大雲山。本尊は釈迦如来。開基（創建者）は細川勝元、開山（初代住職）は義天玄詔である。有名な石庭で知られる。「古都京都の文化財」として世界遺産に登録されている。
What it is
Ryōan-ji is a Rinzai Zen temple in northwest Kyoto, known almost entirely for one thing: a small rectangular garden of raked white gravel and fifteen rocks arranged in five clusters, viewed from a wooden veranda rather than walked through. It's a kare-sansui (dry landscape) garden, and one of the most studied examples of the form. Most visitors come, sit on the veranda for a while, and look — there isn't much else to "do" beyond that, which is the point.
Getting there
From central Kyoto (Kyoto Station area), the temple is roughly 30-40 minutes by bus, or you can combine bus and a short walk. It sits in the same northwestern district as several other major temples, so it's usually visited as part of a loop through that area rather than as a standalone trip.
How long to allow
An hour is usually enough to see the rock garden, sit with it for a while, and walk through the surrounding grounds, including the pond. If you want to linger on the veranda without feeling rushed, or read up on the garden's design while you're there, allow closer to 90 minutes.
When to go
The rock garden is small and the viewing veranda is the only real vantage point, so it fills up with tour groups and gets loud fast. Arriving early in the day gives the best chance of a quieter, more contemplative visit. Weekends and Japanese holidays tend to be busiest.
Combine it with
- Ninna-ji Temple (0.5km) — close enough to walk, with its own grounds and a five-story pagoda.
- Myōshin-ji Temple (1.3km) — the head temple of the school Ryōan-ji belongs to, with a large complex of sub-temples.
- Kinkaku-ji Temple (1.1km) — the Golden Pavilion, a short trip away and often paired with Ryōan-ji on the same day.
- Kitano Tenmangū (1.6km) — a Shinto shrine a bit further out, worth adding if you have extra time in the area.
