妙心寺
Myōshin-ji Temple
妙心寺（みょうしんじ）は、京都市右京区花園妙心寺町にある臨済宗妙心寺派の大本山の寺院。山号は正法山。本尊は釈迦如来。開基（創立者）は花園天皇。開山（初代住職）は関山慧玄（無相大師）。寺紋は花園紋（妙心寺八つ藤）。
What Myōshin-ji Is
Myōshin-ji is a walled Rinzai Zen temple complex in northwest Kyoto, not a single building. It's the head temple of its own branch of Rinzai Zen, and inside the perimeter are dozens of sub-temples along quiet lanes, alongside a large central worship hall, gates, and a bell tower. Most travellers come to walk the grounds themselves rather than see one specific landmark: it's a working monastery, so the atmosphere is more austere and less touristed than Kyoto's better-known temple sights.
Getting There
From central Kyoto (around Kyoto Station or downtown), it takes roughly 30-40 minutes by bus or a combination of train and bus. The complex sits in the Hanazono/Myōshinji area of northwest Kyoto, within walking distance of JR Hanazono Station on the JR Sagano/San'in Line.
Time to Allow
Budget at least an hour to walk through the main grounds. If you plan to enter the central hall or any of the sub-temples that admit visitors, allow closer to two hours.
When to Go
The grounds are large and open, so it doesn't get as crowded as central Kyoto's major temples even during peak seasons. Weekday mornings tend to be quietest. As with most Kyoto temples, autumn foliage and spring can draw more visitors, but the scale of the complex generally keeps it manageable.
Combining With Nearby Sights
Myōshin-ji sits close to several other major temples in this part of Kyoto. Ninna-ji Temple is about 1.1km away, Ryōan-ji Temple (known for its rock garden) about 1.3km, and Kitano Tenmangū shrine about 1.5km. Kinkaku-ji Temple, roughly 2km away, is also reachable on the same outing. These are close enough together to string into a single half-day or full-day walking or bus route through northwest Kyoto's temple district.
