京都国際マンガミュージアム
Kyoto International Manga Museum
京都国際マンガミュージアム とは京都市中京区の旧・龍池小学校跡地にある日本最大の漫画博物館である。
What it is
This museum occupies a former elementary school building and holds one of the largest public manga collections in the world. Around 50,000 volumes sit on open shelves lining the corridors and old classrooms, free for visitors to pull down and read on the spot, on benches, on the lawn outside, or in the reading nooks scattered through the building. A much larger closed-stack collection, including Edo-period woodblock prints and pre-war magazines, is available to researchers in a dedicated reading room. It's a good visit for anyone interested in manga as a medium and its history, not just current series, and the building itself, with its school-era details still visible, is part of the appeal.
Getting there
The museum sits in central Kyoto, close to Karasuma Oike Station on the subway. From Kyoto Station it's roughly 15 minutes by subway (Karasuma Line to Karasuma Oike), or about 20-25 minutes on foot or by bus if you'd rather walk through downtown streets.
Time to allow
Plan for at least two hours if you want to browse the shelves and settle in to read; fans of manga history could easily spend half a day in the reading areas and exhibits.
When to go
Mornings on weekdays tend to be quieter. Weekends and school holidays draw more families and can get crowded, especially around the popular open-shelf sections. Since much of the appeal is sitting and reading, a rainy day is a reasonable time to come, and the outdoor lawn seating is a nice option if the weather is clear.
Combine it with
- Honnō-ji Temple (0.8km) — a short walk away, easy to pair before or after.
- Nijō Castle (1.1km) — walkable, worth a longer visit on the same day.
- Sanjō Ōhashi Bridge (1.2km) — a pleasant riverside stop nearby.
- Kyoto Imperial Palace (1.5km) — a bit farther but still within walking range for a combined itinerary.
