monumental cemetery of Milan

monumental cemetery of Milan

The Cimitero Monumentale is one of the two largest cemeteries in Milan, Italy, the other one being the Cimitero Maggiore. It is noted for the abundance of artistic tombs and monuments.

Cimitero Monumentale

This is Milan's principal historic cemetery, laid out in the late 19th century and known for the density and quality of its funerary art. Wealthy Milanese families commissioned sculptors and architects to design tombs, and the result is an open-air collection of monuments ranging from Art Nouveau to Neoclassical to Rationalist styles. Visitors come less to pay respects and more to walk among the sculpture, much of it striking or unusual. A large arcaded building at the entrance, the Famedio, holds tombs of notable Milanese citizens.

Getting there

From the city centre (Duomo area), it's about a 15-20 minute ride on the metro or tram; the cemetery has its own stop on the M5 line (Monumentale). On foot from central Milan it would take closer to 30-40 minutes.

How much time to allow

Plan for at least an hour to walk the main avenues and see the standout monuments. Anyone interested in sculpture or photography could easily spend two hours or more, since the grounds are extensive.

When to go

Mornings tend to be quieter and give better light for photographing the sculptures. It's a large, open site, so it rarely feels crowded even when other Milan attractions do. Rain makes some of the stone paths and steps slippery, so fair weather is preferable.

Combine it with

  • UniCredit Tower (0.9km) — a short walk away, useful as a modern contrast to the cemetery's historic monuments.
  • Basilica of San Simpliciano (1.4km) and Parco Sempione (1.4km) — both within an easy walk, and Parco Sempione offers a green break afterward.
  • Triennale di Milano (1.6km) — a bit further, worth combining with the Parco Sempione stop if you're spending a half-day in that part of the city.
