Triennale di Milano
What it is
The Triennale di Milano is a museum of design and applied arts set inside Parco Sempione, housed in the Palazzo dell'Arte, a rationalist building from the early 1930s designed by Giovanni Muzio. It's a good stop for anyone interested in Italian design history, architecture, or contemporary exhibitions, rather than classical art. The building also contains the Teatro dell'Arte, so depending on the season you may find a performance running alongside the exhibitions.
Getting there
It sits at the edge of Parco Sempione, within walking distance of central Milan. From the Duomo area, it's roughly a 25-30 minute walk through the city centre and the park, or about 15-20 minutes by metro and a short walk (the Cadorna and Cairoli stations are both nearby).
How much time to allow
Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours to see the exhibitions at a normal pace. Add extra time if there's a temporary show you want to linger over, or if you plan to sit in the park before or after.
When to go
Weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends and afternoons. Since much of the museum's draw is temporary exhibitions, it's worth checking what's currently on display before visiting, as the experience can vary significantly by season.
Combine it with
- Parco Sempione (0.2km) - right outside, an easy park walk before or after
- Sforza Castle (0.5km) - a short walk away, at the other edge of the park
- The Last Supper (0.6km) and Santa Maria delle Grazie (0.7km) - both within walking distance, though the Last Supper requires advance booking
