Castel Capuano

カプアーノ城

Castel Capuano is a castle in Naples, southern Italy. It takes its name from the fact that it was at that point in the city walls where the road led out to the city of Capua. The castle is at the southwest end of via dei Tribunali, and until recently housed the Naples Hall of Justice, which has now moved to the new Civic Center, the Centro Direzionale.

Castel Capuano

Castel Capuano is a medieval castle that once marked the point where the city walls met the road to Capua, which gives the building its name. For centuries it served a very practical function as the seat of Naples's law courts, the Hall of Justice, before that operation moved out to the modern Centro Direzionale. Most visitors come to see the exterior: a solid, fortress-like structure standing at the edge of the old city, worth a look for its role in the layout of historic Naples rather than for museum-style displays inside.

Getting there

The castle sits at the southwest end of via dei Tribunali, right inside the historic centre. From central points like Piazza Municipio or Via Toledo it's a walk of roughly 15-20 minutes through the old town, or a short bus or metro ride if you'd rather not walk the whole way.

How long to spend

Since the interior no longer functions as a courthouse and isn't set up as a visitor attraction, allow 15-30 minutes to see the exterior and take in its position on the street.

When to go

Via dei Tribunali is one of the busiest streets in the historic centre, especially around midday and early evening. Early morning is quieter if you want fewer people in your photos.

Combine with

  • Historic Centre of Naples (0.3km) — the surrounding streets themselves
  • Naples Cathedral (0.4km) — a short walk away
  • San Giorgio Maggiore, Naples (0.5km)
  • San Lorenzo Maggiore (0.6km)

These sit close enough together to cover on a single walk through the old centre.

Santa Maria del Carmine

Santa Maria del Carmine is a church in Naples, Italy. It is at one end of Piazza Mercato, the centre of civic life in Naples for many centuries until it was cut off from the rest of the city by urban renewal in 1900. The church was founded in the 13th century by Carmelite friars driven from the Holy Land in the Crusades, presumably arriving in the Bay of Naples aboard Amalfitan ships. Some sources, however, place the original refugees from Mount Carmel as early as the eighth century. The church is still in use and the 75–metre bell tower is visible from a distance even amidst taller modern bui...
