Historic Centre of Naples

This is the old core of Naples, a dense grid of narrow streets laid out originally by the Greeks and later built up by the Romans, following a history that stretches back over 2,700 years. It's less a single sight than a district: churches, palazzi, markets, workshops and street life packed into a compact area. Travellers come here to walk the main decumani (the old east-west streets), browse shops and food stalls, and see layers of the city's past sitting side by side.

Getting there

The historic centre sits within easy reach of most of central Naples. From the main city centre, it's typically a 15-20 minute walk, or a short ride on the metro (Museo or Dante stations) or local buses, depending on where you're starting from.

How much time to allow

Set aside at least half a day to walk the main streets and dip into a few churches or the archaeological sites along the way. A full day gives more room to wander side alleys, stop for food, and visit sites without rushing.

When to go

Mornings tend to be calmer before the streets fill with shoppers, tour groups and traffic. The main pedestrian streets can get very crowded and noisy, particularly in the afternoon and on weekends, so plan accordingly if you prefer quieter conditions.

Combine with nearby sights

  • San Giorgio Maggiore (0.3km) and Naples Cathedral (0.3km) are both a few minutes' walk away and can be added to the same route.
  • Castel Capuano (0.3km) and San Lorenzo Maggiore (0.4km) are also close enough to fold into a single walking loop through the district.

Santa Maria del Carmine

Santa Maria del Carmine is a church in Naples, Italy. It is at one end of Piazza Mercato, the centre of civic life in Naples for many centuries until it was cut off from the rest of the city by urban renewal in 1900. The church was founded in the 13th century by Carmelite friars driven from the Holy Land in the Crusades, presumably arriving in the Bay of Naples aboard Amalfitan ships. Some sources, however, place the original refugees from Mount Carmel as early as the eighth century. The church is still in use and the 75–metre bell tower is visible from a distance even amidst taller modern bui...
