ナポリ大聖堂

Naples Cathedral

Naples Cathedral

Naples Cathedral (Duomo di Napoli) is the city's main Catholic church and seat of the Archbishop of Naples. Its popular name, Cathedral of San Gennaro, refers to the city's patron saint, and the building houses the chapel associated with him along with layered architecture spanning different periods, including remains of earlier structures beneath the current one. Travellers visit for the religious significance, the interior artwork and chapels, and the sense of the city's history compressed into one site.

Getting there

The cathedral sits in the historic centre of Naples, within walking distance of most central hotels. From Piazza del Plebiscito or the Toledo area, expect a walk of around 15-20 minutes through the old town. Public buses run along Via Duomo, and the nearest metro stops connect within a short walk, though navigating the narrow streets on foot is usually simplest.

Time to allow

Plan on roughly 45 minutes to an hour for the main church and chapels. Visitors who want to also see the underlying excavated area beneath the cathedral should allow extra time, closer to 1.5 hours in total.

When to go

Mornings tend to be quieter than midday. The cathedral can get busy around the feast days connected to San Gennaro, when religious ceremonies draw larger crowds and access to some areas may be more restricted. Outside of those dates, visits are generally calmer.

Combine with

  • San Lorenzo Maggiore (0.2km) - a short walk away, with its own historic layers beneath the church.
  • San Paolo Maggiore (0.3km) and San Giorgio Maggiore, Naples (0.3km) - both easily reached on foot for a churches-focused route through the old centre.
  • The wider Historic Centre of Naples (0.3km) ties these sites together, making it practical to explore them in one continuous walk rather than as separate trips.
