Cappella Sansevero

サンセヴェーロ聖堂

The Cappella Sansevero is a chapel located on Via Francesco de Sanctis 19, just northeast of the church of San Domenico Maggiore, in the historic center of Naples, Italy. The chapel is more properly named the Chapel of Santa Maria della Pietà. It contains works of Rococo art by some of the leading Italian artists of the 18th century.

Rococo art beneath a chapel ceiling

The Cappella Sansevero (formally Santa Maria della Pietà) is a small private chapel packed with Rococo sculpture and painting commissioned largely by Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero, in the 18th century. Most visitors come for the sculptures, above all the Veiled Christ, a marble figure carved to appear draped in translucent cloth. Other notable works include allegorical statues representing virtues and vices, and a frescoed ceiling. Below the chapel, two so-called "anatomical machines" — human skeletal models with visible circulatory systems — draw on the prince's reputation as an alchemist and inventor.

Getting there

The chapel sits in Naples' historic centre, on Via Francesco de Sanctis, a short walk from Piazza del Gesù Nuovo and the Spaccanapoli area. From most points in central Naples it's reachable on foot in 10–15 minutes; the streets are narrow and pedestrian-heavy, so walking is generally easier than driving.

How long to spend

The chapel is small — allow around 30 to 45 minutes to see the main sculptures and the underground crypt.

When to go

Because the space is compact, it can feel crowded quickly, particularly around the Veiled Christ, where visitors often queue to view and photograph the statue. Arriving early in the day tends to mean fewer people; midday and weekends are typically busier.

Nearby

The chapel is well placed for combining with other historic-centre sights:

  • Basilica of St. Dominic (0.1km) — essentially next door
  • San Paolo Maggiore and Santa Chiara (0.3km each)
  • Gesù Nuovo (0.3km)

All four are close enough to visit on the same walk through the historic centre.
