Santa Chiara
산타 키아라 성당(이탈리아어: Basilica di Santa Chiara 바실리카 디 산타 키아라[*])은 이탈리아 캄파니아주 나폴리현 나폴리에 있는 대성당이다.
What it is
Santa Chiara is a walled monastic complex rather than a single church: it holds the Gothic-style basilica of Santa Chiara, a Poor Clares convent, a set of royal tombs (including several Angevin rulers of Naples), and a small archaeological museum with excavated Roman-era ruins. The main reason people come, though, is the cloister — its walls and octagonal columns are covered in majolica tiles painted with vine and landscape scenes, dating to the 18th century. The church itself was heavily rebuilt after WWII bomb damage, so its interior is plainer than the cloister.
Getting there
It sits right on Via Benedetto Croce in the heart of the historic centre (Spaccanapoli), so from most central Naples hotels it's a walk of 10-20 minutes. If arriving from Napoli Centrale station, it's about a 20-25 minute walk, or a short metro/bus ride toward Piazza Dante followed by a few minutes on foot.
Time to allow
Plan on 45 minutes to an hour: enough for the church, a slower walk through the majolica cloister, and a quick look at the museum rooms if you want the archaeological side.
When to go
Mornings tend to be calmer, especially before tour groups moving along Spaccanapoli pick up later in the day. The cloister is open-air, so a sunny spell shows off the tilework best; on hot summer afternoons the courtyard has little shade.
What to combine it with
The complex is extremely well placed for a walking loop through the historic centre: Gesù Nuovo is right across the square (0.1km), the Basilica of St. Dominic is a couple of minutes further (0.2km), and the Cappella Sansevero, known for its sculpture, is also close by (0.3km). Piazza Dante (0.3km) is a good spot to continue toward the metro or grab a coffee break.
