Basilica of St. Dominic
San Domenico Maggiore is a Gothic, Roman Catholic church and monastery, founded by the friars of the Dominican Order, and located in the square of the same name in the historic center of Naples.
What it is
San Domenico Maggiore is a large Gothic church and former Dominican convent facing its own square in the heart of Naples's historic centre. Inside, the church holds side chapels with tombs and funerary monuments of Neapolitan nobility, along with artworks from several centuries. The adjoining sacristy is notable for a series of coffin-shaped monuments set above the walls, a rare survival of aristocratic burial customs. The building's long association with the Dominican Order also links it to Thomas Aquinas, who is said to have taught here.
Getting there
The church sits in the pedestrian core of centro storico, close to Via San Biagio dei Librai and the university area. From Piazza del Gesù or Piazza Municipio it's a walk of roughly 10–15 minutes through narrow streets; from the main train station, Napoli Centrale, allow around 20–25 minutes on foot, or a shorter ride by metro or bus to the historic centre followed by a short walk. Travellers arriving via Naples Capodichino Airport (NAP) will first need to reach the centre by bus, taxi, or metro connection before continuing on foot.
Time to allow
Half an hour to an hour is usually enough to see the main church interior and chapels; add extra time if you also visit the sacristy or any adjoining museum spaces.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter than afternoons, and the surrounding square and lanes can get busy with foot traffic throughout the day given how central the location is. As with many church interiors, dress modestly.

- Santa Chiara (0.2km) – another major historic church nearby, worth combining given the short distance.
- Gesù Nuovo (0.3km) – a short walk further, often visited alongside Santa Chiara.
