Gesù Nuovo
Gesù Nuovo is the name of both a church and a square in Naples, Italy. It is located just beyond the western edge of the city's historic center. To the southeast of the spire, one can see, just a block away, the Fountain of Monteoliveto and the piazza in front of the church of Sant'Anna dei Lombardi.
What it is
Gesù Nuovo is a Baroque church on the square of the same name, and it's one of the more distinctive religious buildings in Naples' historic centre. The exterior is unusual: rough, diamond-pointed stone blocks (piperno ashlar) taken from the original 15th-century Sanseverino palace that stood on the site before the Jesuits rebuilt it as a church. Inside, the contrast is total — a richly decorated Baroque interior with frescoes, marble inlay and side chapels. The church is also associated with San Giuseppe Moscati, a Neapolitan physician venerated locally, and pilgrims come specifically for that connection alongside the art and architecture.
Getting there
It sits at the western edge of the historic centre, an easy walk from most points in central Naples. From Piazza del Plebiscito or the Toledo metro area, count on roughly 10-15 minutes on foot through pedestrian streets. If arriving from Naples Capodichino Airport (NAP), a taxi or bus into the centre takes about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic, followed by the same short walk.
Time to allow
Most visits run 20-30 minutes — enough to take in the facade, the main nave and a few chapels. Add extra time if you want to pause at the Moscati-related devotional area.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter. The square and surrounding streets get busy with foot traffic through the day, and the church itself can fill during services, so avoid Mass times if you just want to look around.

- Piazza Dante (0.2km) — a short walk for a sense of the surrounding neighborhood.
