Palace of Capodimonte
The Royal Palace of Capodimonte is a large palazzo in Naples, Italy. It was formerly the summer residence and hunting lodge of the Bourbon kings of the Two Sicilies, one of the two royal palaces in Naples. Today, the main building holds the main Neapolitan museum for paintings, and much other post-ancient art, in the National Museum of Capodimonte. This has the best collection of paintings from the distinct tradition of Neapolitan art, and also many works from the Farnese Collection.

The Palace of Capodimonte was built as a summer residence and hunting lodge for the Bourbon kings, set on a hill above Naples in parkland rather than the dense city centre. The main draw today is the National Museum of Capodimonte inside, which holds the principal collection of Neapolitan painting along with major works inherited from the Farnese family, including pieces by Titian and Caravaggio. It suits travellers who want to see Italian and Neapolitan art history without the crowds of the city's more famous sites.
Getting there
From central Naples, the palace sits uphill and is usually reached by taxi or bus, since the closest metro stops still leave a walk up a steep gradient. A taxi from the historic centre takes roughly 15-20 minutes depending on traffic; bus routes from Piazza Dante or the Museo metro station take somewhat longer once you account for waiting and the climb.
Time to allow
Plan for at least two to three hours to see the main painting galleries and a portion of the surrounding park; a full visit with the park included can easily fill half a day.
When to go
Mornings on weekdays tend to be quieter than weekend afternoons. Because the museum is somewhat removed from the main tourist circuit, it rarely feels overcrowded, but the park is popular with local families and joggers, especially in the late afternoon.
Combine with
The Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte is a short walk away (0.6 km) and can be paired with the palace if visiting during the day. Santa Maria della Sanità (0.8 km) works well as a stop on the way back down toward the city centre. For a fuller day of art in Naples, the National Archaeological Museum (1.5 km) is a reasonable next stop, though it merits a separate visit given its own scale.
