ナポリ国立考古学博物館

ナポリ国立考古学博物館 は、イタリアのナポリにある国立考古学博物館。ポンペイ・ヘルクラネウムの出土品やギリシア美術・ローマ美術の収蔵で世界的に知られる。

What it is

The Naples National Archaeological Museum holds one of the most significant collections of Greco-Roman antiquities anywhere, built around finds excavated from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. Rooms are filled with mosaics, frescoes and bronze and marble sculpture taken from those buried sites, alongside the Farnese collection of classical statuary that the Bourbon rulers brought together when the building served as their royal museum in the 19th century. It's the place to see the objects that give context to a visit to the excavation sites themselves.

Getting there

The museum sits at the edge of Naples' historic centre, near Piazza Dante. From most points in the centre it's a walk of 10-20 minutes. It's also served by the Museo stop on Naples' Metro Line 1, which connects easily to other central areas and to Naples Centrale station.

How much time to allow

The collection is large. Plan on at least two hours for a focused visit, and closer to three or four if you want to see the mosaic collection, the Farnese marbles and the frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum without rushing.

When to go

Mornings tend to be busier, especially when tour groups arrive early. Visiting later in the day can mean a calmer experience. As with most major museums in Italy, weekends and peak summer months bring larger crowds.

What to combine it with

The museum is right next to the Secret Museum (Gabinetto Segreto), its collection of erotic art from Pompeii, which is often visited as an extension of the same trip. Piazza Dante is about half a kilometre away, a good spot to pause or find a café. San Paolo Maggiore and the Cappella Sansevero, with its famous veiled Christ sculpture, are both roughly 0.6km away and can be worked into the same walk through the historic centre.
