護国寺
Gokoku-ji Temple
護国寺（ごこくじ）は、沖縄県那覇市にある高野山真言宗の寺院。山号は波上山、院号は三光院。本尊は聖観世音菩薩。琉球の真言宗総本山であり、現存する沖縄の寺院では、最も古い寺院である。創建以来、波上宮の神宮寺で、琉球国王の勅願寺でもあった。
Gokoku-ji Temple
Gokoku-ji is a Shingon Buddhist temple in Naha founded in 1367, making it one of the older religious sites tied to the Ryukyuan kingdoms of Chūzan and the later unified Ryūkyū Kingdom. Its main draw for visitors isn't grand scale but historical layering: it's linked to the 19th-century missionary Bernard Jean Bettelheim, who was based in Naha, and to Commodore Matthew Perry's visits to Okinawa in 1853-1854. Like much of Naha, the temple complex has been rebuilt over time, so go expecting a modest, quiet site with historical significance rather than an imposing structure.
Getting there
The temple sits close to central Naha, within easy reach on foot from the Kokusai-dōri shopping street area. If you're coming from further out, a taxi or local bus into the city centre followed by a short walk is the simplest approach; expect the walk itself to take well under 15 minutes from most points near Kokusai-dōri.
How long to stay
This is a brief stop — most visitors spend around 15 to 30 minutes here, enough to look around the grounds and read up on the historical connections before moving on.
When to go
Mornings or late afternoon tend to be quieter and more comfortable, especially given Okinawa's heat and humidity for much of the year. This isn't a high-traffic tourist site, so crowding is unlikely to be a major concern at any time of day.
Combine it with
Gokoku-ji works well as part of a short walking loop in central Naha. The Naha City Museum of History is just 0.1km away, making it a natural next stop for more historical context. Shiseibyō, a Confucian shrine, is about 1km off. Fukushūen, a Chinese-style garden, is 0.6km away, and Kokusai-dōri, Naha's main shopping and dining street, is roughly 0.9km away — a good way to close out the visit.
