守礼門
Shureimon
守礼門（しゅれいもん）は、沖縄県那覇市首里にある首里城歓会門の外、首里を東西に貫く大通りである「綾門大道」 の東側に位置する牌楼型の門（楼門）。「上の鳥居」や「上の綾門」の別名をもつ首里城の第二の坊門である。
What it is
Shureimon is the gate that fronts the approach to Shuri Castle in Naha. It was originally the second of the castle's ceremonial gates, and after the earlier Chūzanmon was demolished in the early twentieth century, it became the first gate visitors pass through. It's a small, single structure rather than a walled complex, and most people see it in passing on the way up to the castle rather than as a destination on its own.
Getting there
Shureimon sits in the Shuri district, inland from central Naha. From the city centre it's typically reached by the Yui Rail monorail to Shuri Station, followed by a walk of about 15-20 minutes uphill, or a short taxi ride. Driving is also possible, though parking near the castle grounds is limited.
How long to spend
Seeing and photographing the gate itself takes only a few minutes. Most visitors pass through it as the start of a longer visit to the Shuri Castle grounds, which can easily take an hour or more depending on how much of the site you explore.
When to go
Because it's the main entry point to Shuri Castle, the area around the gate gets crowded with tour groups, especially in the late morning and around midday. Arriving early in the day tends to mean fewer people around the gate for photos.
Combine it with
The surrounding area has several sites within easy walking distance: Sonohyan-utaki is essentially adjacent, Tamaudun is about 0.2km away, and Enkaku-ji is roughly 0.3km off. Sueyoshi-gū is a bit further at 1.4km, so it's a reasonable add-on if you're prepared to walk a little more or take a short taxi ride.
