Okinawa Shrine
沖縄神社（おきなわじんじゃ）は、沖縄県那覇市首里鳥堀町にある神社。現在は波上宮が管理している。
What it is
Okinawa Shrine sits on the grounds of Shuri Castle in Naha, a Shinto shrine established in the late Taishō period. Its main hall (haiden) was originally the reused former main structure of the castle complex before the shrine buildings were destroyed in the 1945 Battle of Okinawa. Both the castle and shrine have since been rebuilt. It's a modest, quiet stop rather than a major sight in its own right, worth a look if you're already exploring Shuri Castle Park and want to see how Ryukyu-era and Shinto elements sit side by side on the same hilltop.
Getting there
From central Naha, the shrine is reached as part of a visit to Shuri Castle Park, on the northeastern edge of the city. By monorail, take the Yui Rail to Shuri Station, then walk uphill to the castle grounds, around 15-20 minutes on foot. By taxi from central Naha it's roughly 15-20 minutes depending on traffic.
Time to allow
The shrine itself takes only 10-15 minutes to see. Plan for it as a short add-on to a Shuri Castle Park visit, which itself can take an hour or more.
When to go
Mornings tend to be calmer before tour groups arrive at the castle area. Summer brings heat and humidity, so an early visit is more comfortable. The shrine grounds themselves rarely feel crowded even when the main castle buildings are busy.
What to combine it with
Being inside Shuri Castle Park, it pairs naturally with other sites on the hill: Sonohyan-utaki (1.4km) and Shureimon (1.4km) are both part of the same castle grounds circuit. Enkaku-ji (1.2km) and Tamaudun (1.6km), the royal mausoleum, are both a short walk away and can be combined into a half-day covering the area's Ryukyu Kingdom history.
