Osaka Museum of History
大阪歴史博物館 は、大阪市中央区のNHK大阪放送局に隣接して建つ大阪市立の博物館。館長は大澤研一。
What it is
The Osaka Museum of History covers the city's history across four exhibition floors, from the ancient Naniwa Palace period through to more recent eras. It stands on the actual site of the Former Naniwa Palace, and the basement level displays excavated remains of a warehouse, walls, and water supply facilities from that palace, viewed in situ below the museum. The building itself, designed by César Pelli & Associates and Nihon Sekkei, is connected by an atrium to the adjoining NHK Osaka Broadcasting Center. Upper floors also give views over neighbouring Osaka Castle Park.
Getting there
The museum sits in Chūō-ku, close to Osaka Castle, and is easily reached by subway from central Osaka in around 15-20 minutes. From Kansai International Airport (KIX), plan on roughly an hour to reach this part of the city using the airport rail connections into central Osaka.
How much time to allow
Most visitors spend about 1.5 to 2 hours moving through the four floors, including the basement ruins.
When to go
Weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends and holidays. Because several exhibits describe the site's excavated remains, allow extra time if visiting with a guided tour or audio guide.
Combine it with
- Hōkoku Shrine (0.6km) and Osaka Castle Park (0.7km) — both an easy walk, and the park's grounds connect naturally to a castle visit.
- Osaka International Peace Center (0.8km) — also within walking distance, for a look at the city's WWII-era history.
- Grand Cathedral of the Virgin Mary of Osaka (0.7km) — a short walk away if you want to break up the museum visits with a different kind of stop.
