Diocese of Rome
ローマ司教区 は、ローマ教皇が司教として管轄するローマの教区。ラツィオ地方管区に属する。1世紀に創設され、現在、25の小教区からなっており、普段は補佐司教が代理で司牧している。この教区の近辺には7つの教区がある。教皇は、これらの教区を1つの教会管区として裁治権を持つ、ローマ管区大司教でもある。サン・ジョバンニ・イン・ラテラノ大聖堂に司教座が置かれている。
What it is
The Diocese of Rome is the Pope's own diocese: as Bishop of Rome, he heads it directly, making it the administrative seat of Catholicism worldwide. It isn't a single building to visit but a jurisdiction, and its historical and ceremonial center is the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, the cathedral church of Rome and technically the pope's own cathedral, predating even St. Peter's Basilica in that role. Travellers come here for the Lateran complex itself — the basilica, its cloister, and the Lateran Baptistery — rather than for the diocese as an abstract entity.
Getting there
The Lateran complex sits southeast of the historic center, reachable by metro (Line A to San Giovanni) or a 20-30 minute walk from the Colosseum area.
Time to allow
Plan on one to two hours to see the basilica's interior, cloister, and baptistery without rushing.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter than midday, and the site draws fewer crowds than St. Peter's Basilica, though it can still fill up around religious feast days and Sunday services.
Combine it with
The area is easy to pair with other nearby sights: the Domus Aurea (1.1km) and Baths of Caracalla (1.3km) are both a short trip away, and the Arch of Constantine (1.4km) sits just beyond, close enough to fold into a single day exploring this stretch of Rome on foot.
