San Salvador
The Church of Santissimo Salvatore, usually known by its Venetian name of San Salvador, is a church in Venice, northern Italy. It is located on the Campo San Salvador, along the Mercerie, the main shopping street of Venice. The church was first consecrated in 1177 by Pope Alexander III shortly after his reconciliation with Emperor Frederick Barbarossa at nearby San Marco. San Salvador
San Salvador is a large church just off the Mercerie, the covered shopping route linking Rialto and St Mark's Square. The current building dates mostly from the early 16th century, with work carried out over decades by Giorgio Spavento and later Tullio Lombardo, Vincenzo Scamozzi and possibly Jacopo Sansovino, giving it a Renaissance interior that's less crowded with visitors than the big-name sights nearby. It's worth a look for its architecture and artwork, including works by Titian, without needing to plan around it as a headline stop.
Getting there
It sits right in the historic centre, an easy walk from St Mark's Square or the Rialto Bridge, both under five minutes on foot. If arriving by vaporetto, the Rialto stop is closest.
Time to allow
Twenty to thirty minutes is enough to see the main altarpieces and walk the nave, longer if you want to look closely at the artwork.
When to go
Because it's on the Mercerie, the surrounding streets get busy with shoppers and foot traffic through the day, especially in the middle hours. Visiting earlier in the day tends to mean a quieter, less crowded walk to and from the church.
Combine with
Its location makes it simple to pair with a Mercerie walk. The Rialto Bridge and the Rialto market area are both about 0.2km away, and St Mark's Clocktower and the Museo Correr are around 0.3km away, so all four can be covered on one loop through the centre.
