Preah Khan

Preah Khan is a temple complex located northeast of Angkor Thom in the Angkor archaeological park. Built as a Buddhist monastery and university, the site contains architectural elements from both Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Visitors go here to see the extensive corridors, carved gateways, and the integration of stone structures with surrounding jungle growth. Its name translates to "Sacred Sword."

Getting There

The site is accessible from Siem Reap city centre via tuk-tuk or taxi. The journey typically takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic and the specific route taken through the Angkor park.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the complex and explore the various galleries and courtyards.

Timing and Crowds

Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday heat. The site generally experiences fewer crowds than the main temple of Angkor Wat, though it remains a popular stop on standard tour circuits. The dry season is the most accessible time for visiting.

Nearby Attractions

Due to its location, this site can be combined with other smaller temples in the vicinity:

  • Thommanon (1.8km)
  • Ta Nei (1.8km)
  • Preah Pithu (1.8km)
